Barn Hill Station

200 km south of Broome

overcast 28 °C

After leaving Broome, we ventured south to Barn Hill Station. We had mixed reactions on whether to go there or not as we knew we had to turn off the tarred highway and put Bertha through nine km of red corrugated road (really a 4 wheel drive track would be more to the point!) So we tossed the coin and the queens head said to go!.. A vanny just came out of the track and told us we would be alright, so off we went. We had to open three cattle gates and go through several puddles but the Bull Dozer (nissan Patrol) did us proud and Bertha made it well. The fees started at $10 for a day entry, $15 stay overnight without power and it went up from there. So we went for the $15 version for 2 nights thinkiong we had gas to run the fridge off and solar for the lights. But we run out of gas. So we had to eat 3 days supply of food up. So much for lossing weight hey!

Barn Hill is situated on Thangoo Station, which is a working cattle station. Alf & Marie Grey purchased Thangoo in 1960. The property is approximately 430,000 acres and stretches 85 kms along the coast between Broome and Port Hedland. The property runs 8,000 head of Brahman cattle which are marketed to the live export trade through the port of Broome.

Barn Hill is an eco based Park situated on the pituresque coast . The power is generated on the property. Eachpowered site, and there is about 100 of these, has an idividual overload switch. If you exceed your power limit, your switch will throw out. So no electric kettles, toasters or ovens will work. This is why we wnt for the unpowered site as Bertha never uses electricity for lights as she is hooked to solar power all the time and this is working wonderfully. Absolution block at Barn Hill

The other great thing about this place was the kitchen at the homestead baked everyday and you could have wonderful home made bread, sausage rolls, lemingtons everyday. The pricesw were very reasonable too.

The owners wanted a month off and they were looking for some house sitters.... I was tempted but Tony said there was too much maintenence for him and we may not be able to get Bertha out in a months time if it rained!!!! Bad luck. They would also pay you and that is what scared Tony, thinking there is probably more than just house sitting??

Great place to come back too!
